Luxury Farmhouse with Large Garden - View Across The Garden

Table of Contents

Our Luxury Farmhouse Garden

Nestled on a farm and surrounded by fields and woodlands, the luxury farmhouse garden of the farmhouse at Polehanger has a large lawn and mature borders filled with plants, flowers and trees.

The garden sits within a green oasis, perfectly hidden in a corner of Bedfordshire – you wouldn’t even know it was there!

A Walk Through the Gardens in Summer

It’s summer and the gardens of the 18th century farmhouse at Polehanger Farm are filled with beautiful flowers, an absolute pleasure for the eyes and a delight for the senses. The best way to describe this hidden gem is to walk you through it.

If you approach from the courtyard the smell of fresh mint catches you off guard, giving a moment of calm, you might even close your eyes to take it all in.

The garden in front of you is in full colour, at its best and is picturesque.

Wander from here under the pergola, with its trailing green wisteria above and honeysuckle with red-berry clusters at the end.

Pass on through by the tactile pale leaves of lamb’s ear, soft to the touch, and the strikingly tall purple verbena.

Once in the garden you are in awe of the height of so many plants. Enormous yellow hollyhocks, towering pink and white cosmos with bright green foliage, red-hot poker and verbena all swaying in the breeze.

Backdropped by an impressive Cypress tree that gives a real sense of splendour.

The lawn folds out in front of you providing ample space for family games of croquet or bowls or space for an array of  picnic blankets for summer eating and lounging.

The garden to your left extends all the way to the private tennis court, with a path edged by more hollyhocks and a border filled with verbena, lavender and grasses.

Perfect for a Garden Party

The farmhouse garden is large enough to host a garden party or celebratory event, has space galore for an open-sided or bell tent for that rustic feel, and is enclosed by mature trees to the edges to give privacy.

The garden is ideal for a gathering with its good-sized patio, fire-pit, seating area and expansive lawn – a wonderful and flexible outside space.

From the patio looking beyond the lawn the view is of fields of yellow, green or brown depending on the current crop rotation  – currently a sea of golden yellow from the recent harvest.

Connect with Nature

This large farmhouse garden is well-established and bursts into life each year bringing a flourish of colour in mid-summer. A full range of cottage garden plants fill the borders and provide birds, bees and butterflies with nourishment and nectar in abundance.

The harmonious sound of the bees buzzing as they visit the lavender, verbena and mint flowers help you feel connected to nature, make you stop to pause and embrace the wonder of something so small as they hover in front of you.

Feather grasses feature throughout this beautifully maintained farmhouse garden; in amongst the borders, the grasses create a gentle rustling sound as they move making you feel calm and relaxed during the summer months outdoors.

Flower Retreat Days

The Farmhouse at Polehanger was the location of choice for a fabulous flower workshop and retreat day here in July.

Guests were treated to a full day of creativity and relaxation learning the art of flower arranging with @bedfordshireflowerschool in the morning with an afternoon of modern calligraphy with @oliveandmillicent. They also enjoyed a delicious grazing table lunch from @bitearoundtheworld

The day started with a welcome drink followed by a Summer Seasonal Vase Arrangement Workshop with step-by-step guidance from an expert florist followed by a modern calligraphy lesson from the talented Katy from Olive and Millicent, that included a beginners kit to take home and enjoy.

The day ended with a well earned cup of tea and piece of cake as well as a tour around the farmhouse bedrooms and cottage and a look at the glamping cabins over in the meadows.

The Bedfordshire flower school offers a range of floristry workshops, floristry day courses and other craft workshops.

The pairing of the flower school and the Farmhouse at Polehanger as a venue makes perfect sense when you see the gardens and the location here. Keep in touch if you would like to run a similar event or attend a similar retreat day.
